New waste plan proposed

THE increase in kerbside waste and recycling being thrown into landfills is one serious issue the Central Otago District Council wants to solve through an updated waste management plan.

Yesterday the Central Otago District Council approved the public consultation process for a waste management and minimisation plan at a meeting in Alexandra.

Submissions will open on March 29.

It is the council’s second waste management and minimisation plan. The first was written in 2012.

Part of the solution for decreas ing excess kerbside waste in landfills was to change the frequency of recycling collections in the district.

The plan would provide fortnightly collection for mixed recycling (yellow bins) and eight-weekly collection of glass recycling (blue bins).

A fortnightly collection of household rubbish (red bins) would be kept.

The plan proposed to expand the kerbside recycling routes and network of recycling dropoff centres.

Submissions for this plan will close on April 30 and can be made online or in writing.
