3-wheeler ‘lovely machine’
THE Ulysses Motorcycle Club’s motto is ‘‘Grow Old Disgracefully’’ but there’s still plenty of life left in Whakatane rider Malcolm Wilson.
While he is on three wheels rather than two these days — his factorybuilt Carver One rides like a bike, is technically a trike but is registered as a car — Mr Wilson still racks up plenty of kilometres pursuing his passion.
Mr Wilson — who purchased his first new bike as a 16yearold — bought his Carver in Timaru, and has now ridden it back down to the South Island for the club meeting.
‘‘It gets a lot of attention . . . but it’s a lovely machine to ride.’’
The Bay of Plenty man was one of 103 North Island club members who joined 103 South Island counterparts for the club’s annual meeting and rally.
Saturday morning’s AGM was followed by three separate rides, either to Middlemarch, Taieri Mouth and Waihola, or Orokonui.
‘‘We’ve put two years’ work into preparing for this,’’ Otago club spokes man Terry Clapham said.
‘‘It’s a huge weekend and a lot of fun.’’
Numbers were slightly down on expectations, and he thought the shift of dates for the Bert Munro Classic meeting in Invercargill to February had resulted in some North Island members opting to attend that event instead.
However, he was still thrilled with the turnout and expected riders would enjoy the range of motorbike and social events on offer.
The Ulysses Motorcycle Club is a social riding organisation for riders aged over 40, and has branches throughout New Zealand.
