Dodgers retains its premier title

- JEFF CHESHIRE

A STRONG performance in the field enabled Dodgers to successfully defend its premier men’s club title on Saturday.

Dodgers won 51, dominating through the middle stages and making the Cardinals work hard to get on base.

It was in the third inning that Dodgers took the lead, when Logan Herbert and Eric Munro both scored to make it 20.

Jacob Wedlock added a third in the next inning and Munro added another in the fifth to make it 40.

An automatic home run to Wedlock in the sixth extended the lead, before Cardinals were able to strike back as Doug Hill got home.

That was as close as it got though.

Dodgers got out of the inning with no extra damage, before holding their opponents scoreless through the final inning.

Meanwhile, in last week’s women’s final — played between the top allwomen’s teams in the senior reserve noncompetitive grade — Spartans came from behind to beat Immortalz 129.

Immortalz got off to the better start, taking a 42 lead after the first inning.

Spartans then managed managed four of their own in the third, before Immortalz responded with another three to stay in front 76.

Another three runs in the fourth resulted in Spartans edging back after holding Immortalz to two to tie things at 99.

Spartans then pulled away in the fifth inning as Zillah Conder, Sarah Teasdale and Terena Ramsay all scored, before shutting out Immortalz in the final inning.

Teasdale and Ramsay had strong outings, both scoring on three of their four at bats, while Conder and Kirsty Currie both scored twice.

A In the men’s final preview on Saturday, March 24, Cardinals coach Grant Johnstone was incorrectly referred to as Grant Phillips.
