Have your say on Dunedin’s 10-year plan

-

THIS city has a great future ahead of it, with many exciting projects like the hospital rebuild and the redevelopment of the harbourside to come.

But, let’s not forget that we need to maintain and improve our existing facilities and infrastructure. This is particularly important for South Dunedin.

Now is the time to submit your thoughts and suggestions on our city’s 10year plan 20182028.

You can do this online through the Dunedin City Council website, Facebook and Twitter, as well as writing to PO Box 5045, Dunedin. You can also meet with councillors at the South Dunedin Community Popup in Hillside Road on Wednesday April 4, noon1pm.

The key concerns for our community are likely to include:

❑ Replacing any ageing pipework carrying stormwater and sewage.

❑ Establishment of a permanent home for our Community Hub and library.

❑ Improvements in our social housing stock, existing and new.

❑ More initiatives to promote economic development and employment opportunities.

A wider concern will likely include a focus on protecting the beach frontage of St Kilda and St Clair from significant erosion. Work is about to proceed on the St Kilda dunes to encourage the sand to build up, providing a barrier.

Improvements to stormwater pipework for South Dunedin should be at the top of the list and it is encouraging that these have been identified. The community needs reassurance that this work is progressing.

The Community Hub currently in popup form needs to be progressed to a permanent site in the next two years. A larger site will enable an increase in the range of services available to the community. As a community we should be putting forward suggestions for what we want to see in this facility.

Alongside our underground infrastructure it is important that we look to improve the quality of housing and our social housing stock in and around South Dunedin.

We have a shortage of affordable warm dry housing and it is important the city plays its part in this issue.

The next 10 years also needs to see South Dunedin play its part in building our digital economy, rejuvenating rail engineering at Hillside, and other local initiatives with the assistance and encouragement of the city. Offering opportunities for existing and new employers, and the creation of jobs, is a high priority.

So, make sure your voice is heard by the city and that the South Dunedin community can actively play its part. Proud to be South D not just in words but in actions, deeds and intiatives. A plan for South D 20182028.
