Happy to spin their wheels
GENDERREVEAL parties are fast becoming a mustdo for expectant parents, but one Dunedin couple moved things up a gear on Sunday afternoon.
TeReo Apaipo (24) and Siraya Wilson (22) informed about 50 friends and family they were having a baby girl with a burnout culminating in a cloud of pink smoke at their Corstorphine Rd home.
The idea for the revvedup reveal came from Mr Apaipo’s brother, who had initially suggested fitting a pair of pink rubber tyres to his lowered 1988 Nissan Cefiro.
‘‘But they were $700 each imported from the States,’’ Mr Apaipo explained.
In a flash of Kiwi ingenuity the day before the party, he had the idea of crushing pink chalk dust before blasting it from an air compressor as he spun his Cefiro’s wheels in the garage.
Ms Wilson said the unique style in which they announced they were having a baby girl was a hit with partygoers. ‘‘Everyone loved it.’’ Everyone from grandparents to the couple’s best friend, Codie Dunlop, had attended the party, Ms Wilson said.
‘‘A big shoutout to Codie for organising everything.’’
Asked if she had left the reveal a little later than other expectant mothers, the eightmonths pregnant Ms Wilson joked she ‘‘wanted to make sure her bump was showing’’.
The conscientious couple took pains to make sure the midafternoon burnout would not disturb neighbours, dropping leaflets in 40 letterboxes to let them know what was going on.
The party wound up by 9pm. The owner of a neighbouring property said yesterday he had not been disturbed by the burnouts.
