Where’s the vision for the Mosgiel pool?

-

THE seesaw attitude of this

Dunedin City Council is disappointing.

Since 2007 a proposal to build a new pool at Mosgiel has been in the spotlight. Where else in the country has a local community been asked to commit to such a large proportion of the cost of a building project?

Nearly $1 million of fundraising has been committed, yet many councillors seem totally opposed or blase´ about the necessity for this project to proceed.

Mosgiel is the fastestgrowing area in the city and is not, as some describe it, only attractive to old people. There are many young families attracted to the area as well.

Moana Pool is at capacity and is limited as there is no area to expand either the pool or carparking. Schools are on a waiting list as there is not enough space available for more groups to use.

The Mosgiel committee had a suitable plan for a threepool complex, including a hydrotherapy pool that came within budget, yet it appears this plan has been abandoned and the council spent thousands of dollars doing an alternative budget that only provided a twopool plan which was both substandard and a waste of ratepayers’ money.

The pool would be an advantage to everyone and older people would also use this facility as it is on a flat, easily accessed site, with easy access to bus or car parks.

Come on councillors, pull your heads out of the sand and plan for the future. Many buildings in Dunedin would never have been built without a vision.

Yet the wisdom of the council has committed $5 million to redeveloping Sammy’s. Surely something is wrong with this council’s idea of priority?

The people of Mosgiel deserve better. Robin Gardyne
