Disappointed with Luggate camping site

-

RECENTLY my husband and I spent two days in your beautiful part of our country.

We were there for Warbirds Over Wanaka (his bucket list) — we campervanned from Christchurch (my bucket list). We are in our late 70s and live in the central North Island.

We headed for the Luggate Cricket Ground. We had a good idea what to expect and the pernight charge fairly reflected that. What we didn’t expect considering the number of people who have used this site over many years was the obvious sinking lid policy in practice — no, I’m not referring to the primitive dump station you need to step carefully around to get to the toilets and showers, I’m talking about the state of the ablution block itself.

None of the revenue collected over time has been diverted even to maintenance, no attempt is made to do any cleaning on a daytoday basis or check such essentials as toilet paper. Don’t get me started on food waste! In all, a health hazard which could affect hundreds, including overseas tourists.

How this situation is slipping under the radar in this day and age begs the questions ‘‘who is turning a blind eye?’’ and ‘‘why?’’. What has happened to all that income?

It might have been considered an idyllic site 10 to 15 years ago, but wear and tear and total lack of attention to upkeep have made it a disaster waiting to happen. We will not recommend it to anyone.

The air show on the other hand was worth all the planning and money — slick, skilled, knowledgeable presenters, entertaining, informative (even for women!). Congratulations and well done everyone involved.
