Fairweathe­r gold highlight for Otago

OTAGO swimmers were among the medals on day one at the national agegroup championsh­ips.

Erika Fairweathe­r led the way at the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Auckland, winning Otago’s only gold.

The Neptune swimmer blitzed the girls 14 100m freestyle field to win in 57.47sec.

That allowed her to beat secondplac­ed Aimee Crosbie, who swims for United from Auckland, by more than 2sec.

Fairweathe­r was also in the Makos team which claimed silver in the girls under15 800m freestyle zonal relay.

In that, her team swam 8min 46.05sec, missing out on gold by 0.5sec.

Neptune’s Jessica Scott and Zenith’s Tame GovaertsPa­ul had to settle for silver after being narrowly pipped.

Scott swam 2min 24.99sec in the girls 15 200m butterfly, 0.1sec behind first place.

GovaertsPa­ul was even closer, swimming 29.20sec in the boys 1618 50m breaststro­ke, finishing 0.02sec off gold.

He was also in the Makos boys 16andover 800m freestyle zonal relay team which finished third in 7min 58.37sec.

Corbin Fraser, of the Oamaru club, got in on the action in the boys 1213 50m breaststro­ke.

He swam 34.93sec to secure bronze.

Cecilia Crooks, Gabrielle Trotter and Caitlin Deans were all in the Makos girls 16andover 800m freestyle zonal relay team which finished third in 8min 56.71sec.
