Council starts consultation on city parking

- CHRIS MORRIS

THE Dunedin City Council has launched a wideranging review of the city’s underpressure parking.

Members of the public have been asked to share their views on parking arrangements across the city, including what works and what does not.

The results would help shape a report to councillors, identifying key parking problems and possible solutions, council transport strategy manager Nick Sargent said.

The council continued to receive a regular stream of complaints about the provision of parking across the city.

Mr Sargent had received between 60 and 80 complaints so far this year, ranging from a lack of spaces and the effect of cycleway construction, to commuters parking all day outside hill suburb homes and harbourside businesses.

A squeeze on parking around the University of Otago campus and Dunedin Hospital were other issues to feature, as was the range of time restrictions and prices, and the mix of parking in different areas, he said.

‘‘Based on the complaints we are seeing, there’s clearly some issues which need to be sorted out.

‘‘There is definitely pressure on parking,’’ he said.

The review would cover parking in central Dunedin and shopping centres in South Dunedin, Green Island, Mosgiel and Port Chalmers, and include both councilowned parking buildings and onstreet parking.

The public had until May 21 to share their views, and so far 380 submissions had been received, he said.

Once consultation closed, councillors would decide whether to make any major changes, which would require more detailed consultation.

Mr Sargent said the council was ‘‘conscious we haven’t talked to the community for a long time about parking’’.

‘‘It’s a good time to . . . have a wider look and say ‘Is it working for people?’.’’
