Alternativ­e poprock songwriter and performer Bill Direen will perform songs with creative compositio­ns by a small group of musicians covering New Zealand’s history from 191439, new Athenaeum Theatre, Dunedin, tomorrow and Saturday nights.

Is it research?

Anthony Ritchie asks if composing music is research in his inaugural professori­al lecture at the University of Otago, 364 Leith Walk, Tuesday. Prof Ritchie is professor of compositio­n at the university’s department of music, theatre and performing arts and has composed more than 200 pieces in a career that includes 18 years teaching at Otago.
