Dunedin’s colourful street additions are confusing

-

I’M confused.

While I’m all for adding a little colour to my beloved Dunedin, especially as the greyness of winter approaches, the latest additions to our roading system have me completely flummoxed.

Large swathes of red crisscross — a visual warning around various schools. That I understand.

But what am I to make of the broad yellow band that has now mysteriously appeared across (only half of) City Rd?

Then there’s the bright green that highlights the new cycleway on State Highway 1 — but not a consistent strip, more a large green perforation. Bizarre.

And as for what is to be made of the chevrons and bicycle symbols imprinted in the middle of the lanes on George St — but only between Frederick and Albany Sts — what message are they meant to be sending?

Don’t get me wrong. Long may we continue to add such aesthetic flair to our otherwise dour roadways — but some sense of their meaning might also add value. Max Reid Mornington

‘Priscilla’ was fabulous

I WOULD like to offer my congratulations and much praise to the cast and all those involved with Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The fabulous colourful everchanging costumes, the quick dialogue, and familiar tunes and sound that hearing aids were well adjusted to (no repartee was missed) made for a magical evening.

A bonus was the similarity to the vaudeville shows that came to New Zealand in the 1950s with even some of the same throwaway lines, all crowned for me by the bright feathered tableau of the Folies Bergere

I saw up north.

A very big thankyou to all those who put so much time and effort into a performance that will keep me ‘‘buzzing’’, to quote a granddaughter. Diane Isaacs
