OBHS second XV claims big scalp with win over John McGlashan

THE Otago Boys’ High School second XV has had a week to remember.

The side easily won its annual interschool match against the King’s High School second XV on Tuesday and then backed that up with something of a surprise 215 win over 2017 finalist John McGlashan College in the Otago premier schools competition on Saturday.

The side had a tough start to the season with losses to Waitaki Boys’ High School and then the OBHS first XV but it is now back on track.

The win on Saturday at John McGlashan was based on some gallant defence and plenty of tough tackling by the Otago Boys’ side.

The game was scoreless in the second half after Otago Boys’ High School scored three converted tries in the first half, two of them to Charlie Marsh.

Otago Boys’ gave the whole team a game, so it was a total team effort.

In Oamaru, Dunstan held on to beat St Kevin’s College 3027.

The Oamaru side scored a try with a minute to go to get it back within a score of winning. It got the ball back and swept downfield but spilt the ball and the game was over.

Dunstan centre Nick O’DonnellFault ran hard and was rewarded with two tries.

No 8 Beau Meehan and prop Anaia Johnson gained plenty of metres with the ball.

The match was tight the entire time but the home team would be kicking itself as it was slow out of the blocks in both halves and that in the end cost it the match.

Openside flanker Pia Fifita was strong for St Kevin’s College and halfback Ramesh Khatri threw out some good passes.

Hooker Dylan Garraway scored a hattrick of tries for the home team.

In the battle of the two Dun edin coeducational schools, Kavanagh College came out on top, beating Taieri College 3224.

In Balclutha, Waitaki Boys’ High School enjoyed a good trip south, beating South Otago High School 3115.

In the other game, Mount Aspiring College beat King’s High School second XV 650.

Otago Boys’ High School first XV beat King’s High School first XV 209 in an interschool match last Tuesday.
