Hume to take to field for 100th game for side

- STEVE HEPBURN

SHEREE Hume will bring up 100 games for the Pirates women’s team this afternoon and that in itself is a mighty effort.

Hume (26) is set to line up for the Pirates side when it takes on AlhambraUnion at Hancock Park this afternoon.

Hume made her debut when she was 17 and still at St Hilda’s Collegiate.

Not that it lingers in the memory.

‘‘I can’t remember much about it, to be honest. I think it was pretty scary for me, being still at school. But I can’t even remember who we played,’’ she said.

‘‘I’ve played every year since, although I’ve had a couple of injuries and had to miss a few games.

‘‘I was going to retire once I got to 100 but I think I’ll keep on playing. I’m enjoying it, so why not?’’

Hume, a support worker, said she played anywhere in the backs and had been first fiveeighth or second fiveeighth most of the time lately and had also played a bit at fullback.

She has also racked up about 30odd games with the Otago Spirit.

The competition has come and gone over the years and is sitting at five teams at present.

Pirates has won the competition for the past couple of years, which she said was great for the side.

‘‘That first time we won we hadn’t won it for like ages, so that was extra special. We just really enjoyed winning that after all the time.’’

The side was going all right at the moment, though it would welcome back key backs Greer Muir and Kilistina Moata’ane, who had been away for the first part of the season.

The side lost its first two games to University this season and the students loom as the team Pirates will have to beat to win the title.

Hume said the game had probably become easier for her as she got older and more experienced.

She loved the environment at Pirates with its familyorientated approach to training while still concentrating on the game when needed.

She comes from Garston, in Southland, and her younger brother Brodie plays loose forward for the Taieri premier side.

She first got into the sport when her brothers started playing and she wanted to get involved. Her dad coached the team and could not say no.

Hume will have her parents and grandparents present at the game today and will have a blazer presented to her after the match.
