Phys Ed A gains topof table win over Southern

- KAYLA HODGE

PHYS Ed A clipped the wings of the Southern Magpies in its dominant 6049 performance in the topofthetable clash on Saturday.

It was a torrid battle between the top two sides but tips from Phys Ed goal keep Laura Overton enabled her team to pull away 95 midway through the first quarter.

Phys Ed goal attack Ella McCall found easy space for herself cutting into the circle.

Twice in a row, McCall faked the ball into the pocket, drawing the Southern defenders out of the circle and leaving goal shoot Sarah Boomer home alone under the hoop.

Boomer played a mobile game, dodging hard to find clear space for herself on the baseline. She was the most accurate on court and finished with 45 goals from 50 attempts.

Phys Ed went into the first quarter break leading 1813.

Southern brought on Lauren Pickett at wing defence in the second quarter and moved Lisa Lin to goal defence.

The pair shut down Phys Ed’s attacking end by implementing a player on playerstyle defence. Phys Ed struggled to find the same flow on attack it had in the first quarter.

Lin was strong bringing the ball down the court and was an important attacking option at the transverse line.

Southern’s attack end started to find a clear direction for the ball into goal shoot Katherine Morris. A momentum shift occurred and Southern took the lead into the halftime break 2827.

Going into the third quarter, Phys Ed made a positional switch between Laura Moffatt and Ella Brown.

Moffatt moved from wing defence into centre and provided the stability through the middle of the court that was missing in the second quarter.

Brown moved from centre to wing defence and was more affective in the latter.

Brown snuck between Southern feeders Zoey Flockton and Penny Mouat on the circle edge to grab a stunning intercept.

The intercept lit a fire in the belly of Phys Ed and it took a 4441 lead into the final quarter.

In the last spell, Phys Ed was able to pull away from Southern and stamp its dominance on the game.

Phys Ed held on to possession and moved the ball around the court easily. It took the right option of pass and did not force the ball into the goal circle when the option was not right.

South Pacific Titans A had a good game against University Albion B.

Titans was up 3421 at the halftime break and won the game 6637.

Earlier in the day, University Albion A beat Phys Ed B 5448.
