‘Mulan’ casting in the South?

HOLLYWOOD is coming to the South and it wants to borrow some horses.

In the past week a casting call has appeared on Facebook asking for horses and riders to play extras in a ‘‘major Hollywood feature film’’.

It is understood the film is a live action remake of the Disney movie Mulan, directed by Wellingtonian Niki Caro.

It is thought part of the film will be made in the Ahuriri River Valley, near Omarama, and Lake Tekapo.

Auditions for horses and riders will be held in Dunedin (June 29), Alexandra (June 30), Christchurch (July 7) and Geraldine (July 8).

Cricket Hop Productions, owned by Disney, had approached the Waitaki District Council regarding a potential filming location in the Ahuriri Valley.

But no consent applications had been received by the council.

Film Dunedin coordinator Antony Deaker said he had been told the casting call was for Mulan, but the organisation had not been approached to help with any casting.

Film Otago Southland executive manager Kevin Jennings said he could not comment on the casting call or any potential location for the filming.

Adapted from a Chinese legend, Mulan is the story of a young Chinese woman who disguises herself as a male warrior in order to save her father. It is set to be released in 2020.
