Allied Press community journalist­s win swag of prizes

FORMER Mountain Scene reporter Louise Scott won the award for best senior news journalist at the New Zealand Community Newspapers Associatio­n Awards last night.

Allied Press community newspapers picked up a swag of prizes at the awards ceremony held in Rotorua.

Ms Scott is now regions editor for the Otago Daily Times, also owned by Allied Press.

In other awards, Central Rural Life was best allround newspaper in the associate category.

Best senior feature/lifestyle journalist in the associate category went to Central Rural Life reporter Sally Brooker.

Southern Rural Life won the Frank Veale

Memorial Award for the most improved newspaper in its class 2 category, 15,000 or more copies. The Ensign, in Gore, was runnerup in this category.

Greta Yeoman, of The Courier in Timaru, won junior sports journalist and Mandy Cooper, of Mountain Scene, was runnerup.

The award for overall best newspaper and supreme winner went to The Star in Christchur­ch.

Oamaru Mail and Mountain Scene were runnersup for best allround newspaper in classes 1 and 2 respective­ly.

In Dunedin, Shawn McAvinue, of The Star, was runnerup in best senior feature/lifestyle journalist in class 1, up to 14,999 copies.

The Star was also runnerup for best front page newspaper in class 2.

Mountain Scene was runnerup for best advertisin­g feature or supplement in class 1.

The Star earned special mention in the community involvemen­t category for its campaign which raised $60,000 for the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital.
