Still uncertainty over final

- ADRIAN SECONI

IT is unclear whether the women’s club final between University and Pirates at Logan Park this evening will go ahead.

The Pirates players threatened to boycott the match earlier in the week because they were unhappy with 6pm kickoff time.

Under the regulations the team had until noon yesterday to advise the Otago Rugby Union if it intended to default the match and that did no occur.

However, Pirates manager Jess Tuhega said emotions were still running high in the camp and the side had also been battling through the season with a skeleton squad.

She was unable to submit a team list because she was not sure who would front for the fixture.

‘‘We have told our girls the game is at 6pm and if they are playing show up at 5pm,’’ Tuhega said.

‘‘There is no team list submitted for Pirates. I have not sent anything in because basically I’ve had games where girls just don’t show up.

‘‘They feel pretty strongly about this so I don’t know [whether it will go ahead]. I wish I knew.’’

The format for the tournament was set by the Metropolitan Rugby Council in January but Pirates disputes an agreement was reached to play the final in the evening.

The team wanted to play the game earlier in the day and also believes the MRC had moved too far to accommodate University’s wishes.

MRC match committee convener Mike Reggett said the fact Pirates had not furnished a team sheet was not a breach of the regulations and he presumed the game would go ahead as scheduled.

‘‘They may have a grievance and that is their prerogative,’’ Reggett said.

‘‘But as I have said I would be really disappointed if they didn’t front . . . knowing full well what the format has been all year.’’
