Hardfought home win for Clinton

- SOUTH OTAGO CORRESPONDENTS

Clinton recorded a hard fought 2217 home win over Lawrence on Saturday.

It was an even contest and the team that made the fewest mistakes took the points.

The home side led 107 at halftime.

Both teams scored three tries, but Clinton captain Mark McKenzie had a solid day with the boot, kicking two conversions and a penalty.

Prop Ben Millar and fellow forwards Ross Burnet and Greg Landels crossed for Clinton.

First fiveeighth Joe Andresen added a try and a conversion for Lawrence.

Ben Higton and Oscar

Goodlet also crossed.

Clutha remained unbeaten with an entertaining 5431 win over Owaka at Clutha.

The home side started strongly and put on 26 points inside the first 20 minutes.

Owaka kicked the ball to the Clutha back three, who sparked attacks from distance and were elusive with the ball in hand.

Once Owaka held on to the ball, it found territory and scored points.

Clutha led 4019 at halftime and while Owaka found its feet in the second spell, the host finished with a flurry.

Crescent took maximum points from its game at Heriot.

The travelling side recorded a 3927 win, scoring six tries to Heriot’s four and leading 178 at the break.

Crescent scored some nice tries through solid phase play; two of its tries started deep inside its own half.

The majority of the Crescent backline scored tries, which is a solid indicator of where the holes were in the Heriot defence.

Clutha Valley piled misery on to Toko with a commanding 447 win at Clydevale.

The travelling Toko side dominated possession for the opening 10 minutes but found it hard to penetrate the staunch Valley defence.

Once the Valley players found their stride there was no stopping them as they raced out to a 270 lead at the break.

Toko had no answer to Valley’s fast running backs and prowess out wide.

Winger Max Duncan, in his final game for the home side, scored another brace of tries to take his season total to 13.

The midfield pairing of Jonny Sargent and Todd McCammon, in his 100th game, for the club, both crossed the chalk and had outstanding games.

Hillend claimed an exciting 3027 win over South Otago High School.

However, School had the better start to the first quarter.

It settled into its work, getting the ball down to the shooting combination of Amber Mowat and Irie Rickus.

School’s goal keeps, EllaRose Lawrence and Brooke Storer, were able to disrupt the incoming Hillend ball and get good turnover ball.

Hillend showed great zone defence through the midcourt, but towards the end of the first half both teams were guilty of throwing away good ball. School led 1612 at halftime.

It was Hillend who found another level and had a very strong third quarter, outscoring School 115 which brought the scores to 2321 in favour of Hillend.

The last quarter was wellfought, with both teams looking after their own ball.

At one stage it was goal for goal and all tied up.

But the older, maybe wiser, heads of Hillend held it together, pouncing on any loose balls of School and were able to turn them into goals.

Player of the Day for School was Lawrence and for Hillend, also in the defence circle, it was Anna Whiteside.

Southern P won its promotionrelegation game on Tuesday to stay in the Premier one section, but had a tough start to round two, going down 4717 against Black Gold Sting.

Clutha Rugby and Redwyns went head to head in a tight game that finished in a 3333 draw.
