Alexandra District Court
REOFFENDING on driving charges would ‘‘almost certainly’’ result in a jail term, Judge Michael Turner told a defendant, whom he described as having little regard for road safety legislation.
Thomas Cameron Padget (31), spray contractor, of Dunedin, appeared in the Alexandra District Court, having been convicted on charges of speeding, giving false or misleading information to the police and driving a vehicle not fitted with an alcohol interlock device, all on January 13 in Cromwell.
He was sentenced to a total of 300 hours’ community work and nine months’ supervision and disqualified from driving for 13 months.
The court heard Padget was supposed to be driving a work vehicle fitted with an alcohol interlock device but that vehicle had broken down so he was driving another truck. When stopped by police for speeding, he gave a false name and ran off.
Indecent assault
A 40yearold Central Otago man was sentenced to a total of five months’ community detention and six months’ supervision for an indecent assault on a woman and drinkdriving (241mg), on December 19 last year.
The man’s name was suppressed to protect the identity of his victim.
Judge Turner said the man had been described as a ‘‘functioning alcoholic’’. When intoxicated, the defendant had twice squeezed the breast of his former wife. The offending took place in her home.
The defendant was a first offender and was remorseful about his behaviour, the judge said.
