All Portugal’s goals to Ronaldo

- STAFF REPORTER

THREE 10 wins highlighted yesterday morning’s games at the Football World Cup.

That allowed Portugal, Spain and Uruguay to emerge unscathed from their second games.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fourth goal of the tournament as Portugal ended Morocco’s hopes of progressing to the next round.

The star striker headed home a fourthminute goal after Morocco had left him unmarked on the edge of the sixyard box.

It was Portugal’s only goal, but it was enough for victory.

After two games, Ronaldo has scored all of Portugal’s goals.

Another big name — Luis Suarez — was to the fore for Uruguay against Saudi Arabia.

He poked in a corner in the 23rd minute to give his side the lead and, ultimately, the win.

The win confirms Uruguay and Russia will advance to the next round, having both won their first two games.

It also ends the hopes of Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The final game of the day resulted in a win for Spain over Iran. It was hardfought, as a stroke of luck helped Diego Costa score the only goal, in the 54th minute.

Andres Iniesta fed a pass through to Costa, but as Ramin Rezaeian came across in cover, he thumped the ball into Costa’s

knee. It deflected off Costa and into the goal.

The win leaves Spain tied with Portugal on four points at the top of Group B.

Mexican striker Javier Hernandez has appealed to his country’s football fans to stop their homophobic chanting at World Cup matches, as Fifa once again fined the Mexican Foot ball Federation for its fans’ misconduct. Fifa slapped the Mexicans with a fine of 10,000 Swiss francs ($NZ14,668) for what it called ‘‘discriminatory and insulting chants’’ during its surprise 10 win over Germany this week.

Mexicans have long shouted a slang word for a male sex worker at games, which gay rights groups argue is homophobic.

The Mexican Football Federation was sanctioned 12 times for homophobic chanting during the World Cup qualifying campaign, Reuters reported.
