Dunedin’s forecast not all it seems

-

I HAVE been fascinated by the TV1 morning weather reports recently, ever since looking out the window of my Mornington residence some time ago at a clear blue sky, while the TV1 weather reporter told New Zealand that ‘‘Dunedin is suffering under freezing fog!’’

But Monday last was the best yet. As I viewed the dappled sunlight on the harbour, Mattie McLean told me that ‘‘Dunedin is wakening to overcast, misty rain.’’

A few minutes later the main news presenters delighted in showing a view over the peninsula of blue sky with a drift of cloudtinged early morning sunlight, saying what a beautiful sight it made.

Behold, a further five minutes and Mattie was again telling New Zealand that ‘‘Dunedin is wakening to overcast misty rain!’’

Come on TVNZ. You have direct photo contact with each city; make use of it and provide us with correct, uptodate information.

Boulder Beach track

ANYONE who has ever taken the track from the Boulder Beach vicinity to Highcliff, will be pleased that some attention is being given to what has long been the ‘‘stickingpoint’’; the short midsection of the climb which was frequently overgrown by gorse.

Good to see, too, that students are involved.

A really good walk, for anyone of moderate fitness, is to start out from the car park at the foot of Seal Point Rd; take the roadway, which deteriorates into a track partway down, towards Boulder Beach, then perform the slog up on to the shoulder of Highcliff.

From there, proceed via McMeeking Rd to the head of the Karetai Track, and follow with the descent to Smaills Beach. It’s a great day out, (perhaps a halfday, for the more fit), and noone will be demanding a ‘‘refund’’ due to feeling shortchanged on the quality of the scenery or other aspects of the experience.
