Football South urged to support teams equally

-

I AM disappointed to see the old boys club has reared its ugly head again, this time at Football South. If they don’t have enough money to support the women’s teams then they don’t have enough money to support the men’s team. Yet they seem to be able to fund the men’s teams no problem. Well done to Terry Parle for fighting for parity. It is disappointing the Football South management would not reappoint him.

I AM compelled to express my outrage and disappointment with the treatment of our Southern United women’s football team. (ODT, 22.6.18)

Football South should hang its head in shame. I was involved with the women’s association back in the early 1990s. The Otago Football Association then treated our efforts with encouragement and respect.

I have been to several of the team’s games this year and was amazed and proud to watch such skilful players in action. Their results speak louder than words. Praise to the coach and team.

Surely the women deserve better than this, especially when equality in sport is currently a major topic.

Media success

A HEARTY congratulations to all the winning journalists and newspapers in the Otago press community. It is excellent to see Otago doing well in awards such as the New Zealand Community Newspaper Association Awards. We can know our little local papers are employing the right people.

It’s good to know local journalists are out there, digging into issues and reporting them in a manner that brings national recognition. Local papers are important. They bring local issues and local people to the fore in a way that the big nationals cannot.

So, again, congratulations to Shawn McAvinue and particularly to Louise Scott, Greta Yeoman, Sally Brooker and Mandy Cooper. It is good to see local women reporters so strongly represented in national awards.
