Cyclesafety measures on Dunedin roads puzzling
WHAT are the roading people doing?
Those ugly concrete slabs supposedly designed to protect our cyclists — why didn’t they just build a Trump wall (I joke)?
Didn’t anyone think about the consequences, wrecking the viability of our museum for instance?
Was there a budget for alternative nearby parking or is that simply an unintended consequence that can be ignored in the hope it will go away?
And then there is the proliferation of the yellow posts, which are supposedly to add to the safety of the intersections but add to the confusion instead. Are they actually of any use?
What about ripping them out, starting again, applying some intelligent thinking and some common sense, look at the consequences, look at preserving the beauty of our city and stop making this community just look stupid. J. Park

Sanctity of marriage
HELEN Clark is quoted as saying, after the birth of Neve ArdernGayford: ‘‘People are really interested in this first family — for gender equality and women choosing their own destiny, the symbolism is very powerful.’’
On the one hand, the application of the American appellation — ‘‘first family’’ — is totally inappropriate in New Zealand. But it serves to illustrate again how in thrall to America are the antiAmericans.
On the other hand, one has to wonder how this serves Neve’s gender equality or her choice of destiny. Research tells us children born to unmarried parents have markedly bleaker futures than those born to married parents who stay married.
Marriage is simply a public statement of a permanent commitment of a man and a woman to each other and to their children.
That neither Ms Ardern nor Mr Gayford are willing to make such a commitment is nothing to celebrate. Leo Leitch
