Repeat success for Ashburton
EXTRA! SPELLING QUIZ
THE spelling talents of Ashburton College pupils were demonstrated for the second year running, as a new trio of pupils claimed first place in the Otago Daily Times Extra! central South Island year 9 and 10 quiz last night.
The sole Ashburton team of Ella Pearson, Chinatsu Hunt and Marc Calzon retained the school’s first place title with their 73.5 points out of 100.
Another Ashburton College team won last year.
However, despite the success of their predecessors, none of the trio had been expecting the win, all giving a resounding ‘‘no’’ when asked.
Second place was awarded to a team from Geraldine High School, which scored 72 points.
Third place went to Mountainview High School, with 69 points.
The 19team strong interschool competition, held in the Timaru Boys’ High School hall, followed on from the year 56 and year 78 competitions held on Wednesday night.
Five schools from the Timaru district, Geraldine and Ashburton competed in the event, after the Oamaru teams failed to make an appearance.
The junior high school event was MC’ed by Timaru Boys’ deputy rector Ross Stevenson and Extra! editor Trish Rowe.
The quiz is run around the central and southern South Island by the Otago Daily Times,
through Extra!, its
monthly Newspapers in Education publication for primary, intermediate and junior secondary school pupils.
Mrs Rowe said the three Central South Island quizzes had been the final collection of events.
Previously, quizzes were held in Christchurch, Dunedin and Central Otago.
She said schools and teachers had been ‘‘really supportive’’ of the event and competing pupils.
‘‘It’s been really challenging but really exciting,’’ she said.
