New Zealanders are starting to turn against 1080 poison

-

FURTHER to Ron Eddy’s concerns on the use of this despicable poison (ODT, 20.6.18), let me say that yes, there are many, many caring New Zealanders who share the very same view.

The indiscriminate use of 1080 poison destroys pretty much everything in its path, from the smallest insects to the largest mammals.

Do people care?

Thankfully, more and more are opposing the use of 1080 poison as they come to understand the implications of it all.

As for the predatorfree New Zealand by 2050 and the impact 1080 will have on achieving this goal.

Well — have you seen many rabbits around lately after 50 years of throwing 1080 poison at them?

In some parts of our district they are back in their hundreds and thousands again.

The Tb problem supposedly spread to cattle by possums.

The millions of dollars spent trying to eradicate them with 1080 poison was a waste.

Not even half of all New Zealand farmers followed the rules regarding stock movement from one farm to another.

Consequently, Tb was spread by the farmers themselves.

The very same thing is happening now with M. bovis.

I see our ‘‘clean, green image’’ as one of our best market ploys.

Surely we are better to enhance this rather than destroy it with our continual use of 1080 poison.

If our overseas customers for our agricultural products could see what was going on inside our forests, they wouldn’t be too impressed with the inhumanity of it all, let alone the environmental impact.
