Kurow shows form as Athletic caned

Kurow showed it is peaking at the right end of the Citizens Shield competitio­n as it ran in 10 tries to cement second place with a 6627 hiding of Athletic Marist in the penultimat­e round of the regular season.

An even first quarter left Athletic holding a 105 lead with tries to Siosua Fifita and Junior Fakatoufif­ita, while Kurow’s Harvard Fale added one.

Kurow prop Petelo Houhila touched down midway through the half for the first of his four tries to give Kurow a 1210 lead it was not going to give away.

Tyler Burgess whipped in for a try and Houhila crossed for his second.

Fullback Donald McDonald added the conversion­s to give Kurow a 2610 halftime lead.

Kurow dominated the second half adding a further 40 points with tries to Jason Angland, Houhila — who both scored two — Fale and Craig Hollister.

Duncan Jones scored for Athletic Marist in the second half, while fiery flanker Junior Fakatoufif­ita deserved his two tries.

A Levi Emery’s boot carried Maheno to a 2926 win over Old Boys.

Maheno led 1614 at halftime, with Jacob Day scoring a try while Emery added a conversion and three penalties.

Timoci Bolitavu and Kelepi Funaki both scored converted tries for Old Boys.

Sam Tatupu extended Maheno’s lead with an unconverte­d try before Old Boys No 8 Sami Tongotongo scored and Inoke Naufahu converted to make it 21all

Robbie Smith’s unconverte­d try put Maheno back in front 2621 before Old Boys skipper Ralph Darling crossed for an unconverte­d try to level the score again.

The boot of Emery had the final say with a further penalty.

A Excelsior lowered Valley’s colours as winger Bryan Hazel scored four tries in its 4219 win.

Netball

Waitaki Girls’ Wildfire went out to a 105 lead after the first quarter against Waitaki Lightning Strike.

The second quarter was even at 99, but Lightning Strike applied the pressure to win the second quarter 144.

Wildfire lifted its game to trail 2227 at threequart­er time.

Wildfire actually had the better of the final quarter 65, but it was still four goals in arrears at fulltime.

Kurow, returning to the premier ranks, dropped its game against Valley Silver by a twogoal margin.

Valley Gold produced good form to beat Athletic Maroon 5925.

The game between St Kevin’s A and Maheno will be played after the school holidays.

Football

Meadowbank came home in a happier frame of mind after its South Canterbury league match. Playing Geraldine, the first XI took the lead in the first half with an Andy Lane goal, the only score of the game, while the Meadowbank Reserves piled on the goals when it beat the Geraldine Reserves 32 after being tied at 11 at halftime.

Hockey

In a highscorin­g game Tainui and Temuka fought out a 55 draw after the score had been tied at 33 at halftime. For Tainui, Thomas Wouters (2), Nick Dalziel Caleb Scarlett and Ryan McKay all scored.

Indoor bowls

Mike Howard of the Oamaru club won the Henselite Singles tournament on Saturday for the sixth time, beating Paul Daley (St Pats) 138 in the final.

The Jenkins Triples tournament was held on Friday and the winning Oamaru club team was Bede Mallon (s), Andy Blakeley and Rhonda Sinclair, who beat Rhonda Lockerbie (s), Graham Larcombe and Aylene Millar, also of the Oamaru club, 65.

Gordon Robb and Jo Kington won the Yankee bowls with Rhonda Lockerbie(s), Aylene Millar and Emma Robb.
