SENTENCED by Judge Kevin Phillips in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday were. —

A Alexander John Manaaki Hope (18), of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng aged under 20, 250mcg (said only had two beers), John Wilson Ocean Dr, about 12.40am, June 23, fined $250, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed three months.

A Kafaongo Tuipulotu Katoa (19), textile worker, of Oamaru, drinkdrivi­ng aged under 20, 159mcg (driving without headlights on; said had two glasses of wine, driving to nearby address), Queen’s Gardens, about 2.15am, June 24, fined $160, court costs $130, disquali fied three months.

A Rhys Christophe­r Smith (32), boner, of Dunedin, drove while disqualifi­ed (Smith was stopped for a random breath test, said he was driving to work; defence counsel Cate Andersen said the defendant made a “poor decision” and had no other way of getting to work); 2.20am, June 1, Kaikorai Valley Rd, fined $350, court costs $130, six months’ disqualifi­cation, Toyota to be forfeited to the Crown.

A Timothy Lyn Thomson (30), forklift operator, of Balclutha, driving while driver licence suspended (said knew he was suspended, needed to get his daughter to school), Balclutha, about 8.40am, May 11, fined $350, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months. Public defender Pete Tuala said no driving error, Thomson had made a $250 donation to St John ‘‘as a good gesture’’.

A Jamie Andrew Wright (24), labourer, of Dunedin, breaching community work (failed to complete required number of hours within period prescribed), May 9, sentence cancelled, new 170hour term (hours remaining on sentence cancelled), final warning.

A Vincent Hancock Flaws (24), parttime worker, of Dunedin, Crimes Act male assaults female offence (Flaws at Duncan St address with 29yearold victim; Flaws began argument over housekeepi­ng matters; grabbed victim by arms, throwing her into seated position; while yelling at her, threw a clothing rack, which struck one of her legs; continuing the verbal abuse, Flaws yanked on victim’s ponytail; victim yelled back at him loudly enough for passerby to become alarmed and call police; spoken to, Flaws had no explanatio­n for his actions), about 1pm, February 23, nine months’ supervisio­n (includes requiremen­t to undergo domestic violence programme).

A David Andrew Dowie (20), Crimes Act male assaults female offence (Dowie and partner at home in bedroom with their baby daughter; argument started, escalated; Dowie threw baby’s pacifier at victim, striking her on forehead, then ‘‘headbutted’’ victim twice on forehead; incident caused visible red mark on victim’s forehead, and headache for which she took pain relief), evening March 23, nine months’ supervisio­n (includes requiremen­t to undergo Stopping Violence programme). Public defender Sophia Thorburn said offence ‘‘lower end’’ of its type; afterwards, defendant so worried about incident he sought help, ‘‘has begun Stopping Violence’’; no previous conviction for violence.

A Gene Rangi Browne (42), of Milton, possessing cannabis (police executed search warrant at his home, found selfsealin­g bags of cannabis on the couch and in the kitchen, 72g total, said it was for personal use, bagged up to monitor usage; defence counsel Steven Turner said Browne believed he was smoking too much and was regulating his intake, the defendant lost his leg in an industrial accident in 2012 and Mr Turner said cannabis assisted with the pain), May 18, 50 hours’ community work (Probation would make arrangemen­ts for light duties).
