Animal kingdom domination — is it right?

Dominion, an Australian documentar­y narrated by Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara, explores the morality and validity of our dominion over the animal kingdom. Showing tonight at Burns 2 lecture theatre, it contains the most recent and highestqua­lity footage obtained by drones and hidden and handheld cameras from hundreds of investigat­ions across Australia.

Behind the scenes

Kai Tahu dancer and choreograp­her Louise PotikiBrya­nt and Kai Tahu theatre practition­er Rua McCallum are planning a work called Wairua for February. The pair will talk at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum on Saturday about Wairua and the motivation behind this and other performanc­e pieces they have created.

Chinese writer’s plight

A poetry reading featuring Alan Roddick, Carolyn McCurdie, David Howard, Heather Bauchop, Majella Cullinane, Jonathan Cweorth, Kirstie McKinnon, Diane Brown and Emer Lyons will be held at Dunedin City Library tonight to highlight the plight of Chinese writer and artist Liu Xia, who is living under severe restrictio­ns in China.

Staff from Dunedin’s Wildlife Hospital will talk about what they do, what kind of animals they treat and some of their success stories at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery on Sunday afternoon.
