Taken aback by Musselburgh community spirit
ON behalf of the staff at the Musselburgh Food Centre, I would like to sincerely thank the communities of Musselburgh, Andersons Bay and surrounds for all the support shown to us all after the armed robbery of my business on June 7.
The outpouring of outrage that ‘‘something like this could happen in our community and to our local dairy’’ was powerful and heartfelt.
We received many gifts of flowers, baking, phone calls and other kind gestures from our locals, many of whom we only know by your faces. The constant ongoing support from everyone has been amazing.
Going through a lifechanging experience such as this we have learned firsthand what community spirit means and are so grateful that we live and work in this fabulous neighbourhood.
I would also like to acknowledge the Dunedin police, who were very supportive to us on the night of the robbery and who continue to keep us updated.
Community spirit is most definitely alive and flourishing in Musselburgh.

Avoiding the oneways
R. WILLIAMS makes a very good point about the oneway system (ODT, 7.7.18).
In my small car, I cringe when sandwiched between a ‘‘big rig’’, even a big SUV, and parked cars.
These days, I get around this by routinely avoiding the oneways — George St, with its generous width, is a much better option. If, however, wee Swifts were to be accorded their own special lane on the oneway, then I would like to put up my hand for Minis as well, not to mention a special lane for emergency services.
The new tight corridors on the oneway system will surely make it nighon impossible for traffic to get out of the way as ambulance, police and fire personnel attempt to reach targets.
Oh, and I note that the new hospital, as well as the police and fire stations, will/do all largely depend on the oneway system for speedy getaways/ arrivals. Good luck with that!
