Queenstown District Court

-

THE mother of a teenager convicted of assaulting her is fearful for her own life, a Queenstown District Court judge said yesterday.

The 18yearold, who has name suppression to protect the victim, previously admitted one charge of assault on May 22.

Yesterday, Judge John BrandtsGiesen told the teen the maximum sentence was one year in prison.

‘‘I’m not suggesting that you would be [sentenced to that] under any circumstances . . . but don’t . . . dumb down what you’ve done.’’

The teenage boy went into his mother’s house to get something to eat before he began arguing with her.

He became agitated, began hitting furniture and was verbally abusive towards her.

She went to have a shower and afterwards was sitting on her bed when the teen entered her room.

‘‘The long and short of it is, you ended up spitting on your mother, having yelled more abuse at her, stating you had no respect for her.’’

He attempted to spit on her a second time, Judge BrandtsGiesen said.

The teenager left the room and then entered again, continuing to scream abuse at her.

His mother left the room and called police — the teen followed her while she was on the phone, so she sought refuge in a locked bathroom until police arrived.

Judge BrandtsGiesen said the boy had spent some time in custody after his arrest.

‘‘I suspect that has not been a pleasant experience for you.

‘‘You behaved like a rude and unpleasant boy towards your own mother who cares for you and who’s provided for you.

‘‘The victim impact statement makes it quite clear how [this] has affected her and her partner.

‘‘They are fearful of you, even fearful for their own lives.

‘‘They are entitled to better from you than that.

‘‘You have behaved disgracefully.’’

Judge BrandtsGiesen deferred his sentence for 12 months and cancelled existing sentences of community work and supervision.

He imposed a sentence of 12 months’ intensive supervision with judicial monitoring and a protection order to protect the boy’s mother and her partner.
