- BRIDGET THAYER

PHYS Ed A put on a dominant performance to extend its winning streak to 11 and remain unbeaten this season with its 7145 win over College A in the Dunedin premier club competition at the Edgar Centre on Saturday.

The start of the game was tight, with the teams going goal for goal, until a turnover in Phys Ed’s favour started an important run of goals that led to a 1711 advantage for Phys Ed A at the first break.

The defensive pressure from Phys Ed through the court forced College to turn over plenty of ball in the second stanza, which the shooting combination of Sarah Boomer and Ella McCall were able to convert into extending their side’s lead.

The Phys Ed attacking end created good space, with McCall rolling the top of the circle and Boomer maintaining a solid hold which the Phys Ed feeders utilised well. Phys Ed had stretched its lead to 3522 by halftime.

Phys Ed changed its goal attack at the start of the third quarter, bringing Georgia Heffernan on, but this did not disrupt its momentum at all. Phys Ed continued to roll out the goals for the remainder of the game as the defence picked up a number of intercepts and rebounds at the other end.

Laura Overton continued to show good form, with another commanding performance at goal keep against two of the Netball South Beko team shooters, Kiana Pelasio and Bella Masani. Overton was able to shut down the College shooting combination and pick up a number of tips, intercepts and rebounds with her defensive partner, Mariah Nelson, throughout the 60 minutes.

The final quarter proved to be more of the same, as Phys Ed A continued to build on its lead and earning a 26goal margin at the final whistle.

In the other early game of the day, Southern Magpies showed their class against Phys Ed Blue with a dominant 6130 win. The return of a number of Netball South Beko players to the Southern Magpies team really lifted the side’s intensity.

Fantastic pressure from the defensive unit of Tarryn Dickson, Lauren Pickett and Jess Dermody created a number of turnovers that Southern used to create a decisive lead early in the game. Southern built on its first quarter lead throughout the game, with the shooting combination of Jess Allen and Katherine Morris working well to convert the ball.

There was a hardfought battle in the other match in the competition, in which Phys Ed B came out on top over University Albion A 5351.
