Some big scores as school competition resumes

SCHOOL has been out for the past two weeks but training has continued for top school players, as the Otago premier school competition resumed on Saturday.

Some players might have enjoyed the holidays a bit too much judging by the scores, as some big wins were recorded.

Otago Boys’ High School first XV beat Dunstan High School 7817 at Alexandra, and the Otago Boys’ side appears to be peaking nicely for the business end of the competition.

In Oamaru,Waitaki Boys’ High School was given a rude awakening by John McGlashan College, which after leading 127 at the break ran away with the game in the second half and won 367.

It was probably the best performance of the season for McGlashan, which worked hard all day and found gaps in the Waitaki defence.

Waitaki was too loose in its ball carries, and could not get much going. Hooker Will Knight did well for the home team, but it was one to forget for Waitaki Boys’.

It perhaps had its eyes on the annual interschool match against Otago Boys’ High School on Wednesday, which will also double as a premier schools competition match.

In the other game in the top section, King’s first XV travelled to Wanaka and beat Mount Aspiring College 170. The win secures King’s a place in the semifinals.

In the championships section, St Kevin’s College won a tight one over Otago Boy’s High School second XV 1715. The result leaves the two teams tied at the top of the section.

South Otago High School made the most of the home advantage to notch a big win over Taieri College, 5919. These sides fought out a thriller in the first round, which South Otago won late in the match, and it was a surprise to see it have such a commanding victory on Saturday in Balclutha.

King’s second XV and Kavanagh will play on Wednesday, in the final match of the round.
