New coach appointed for Southern United women

IGNACIO Sande has been appointed as the new Southern United women’s coach.

The Uruguayanborn coach takes over from Terry Parle, who was controversially dumped a month ago after taking the side to last year’s playoffs.

Based in New Zealand since 2010, Sande has been the Southland football development manager for the past four years and was named Southland coach of the year three times.

During that time he has coached both boys and girls Football South teams at national age group tournaments.

He has also coached for Football New Zealand at national talent centres, and possesses an OFC B coaching licence.

‘‘I’m delighted to be named as the head coach of Southern United Women,’’ he said.

‘‘This squad and women’s football in the Southern region in general has huge potential.

‘‘I’m keen to get started, and will be working quickly to engage with the players directly, get pitch sessions going, and overall ensure we’re ready for the coming campaign.’’

The season begins on September 16, and will play through two full rounds for the first time, before the finals on December 16.

The side is looking to back up after the most successful season in its history last year, making the top three after claiming three wins and a draw in six games.
