Three Dunedin crashes in icy conditions
DUNEDIN awoke to black ice and three crashes in quick succession yesterday morning.
Police warned drivers to take care after rain doused roads on Tuesday evening, followed by low temperatures overnight.
A police spokeswoman said they were called to the first crash in George St, near the intersection with Bank St, in North Dunedin, about 6.50am.
Noone was injured in the twocar crash, but the driver of one of the vehicles left the scene.
Conditions were icy, the spokeswoman said.
As of yesterday afternoon police had yet to catch up with the driver.
Later, at 7.53am, a 4WD crashed into a pole in Taieri Rd in ‘‘very icy’’ conditions, the spokeswoman said.
The crash downed some telephone wires, but noone was injured.
After the crash police called Dunedin City Council contractors to get the road gritted.
They slowed traffic until contractors arrived.
Police were called to a third crash in Mount Cargill Rd at 8.25am where a car crashed into a bank, but it was unclear whether it was icerelated.
A St John spokesman said a woman was treated for minor injuries at the scene and was not transported to hospital.
Elsewhere in Otago, freezing conditions were also making roads icy.
The Central Otago District Council said temperatures were between 3degC and 5degC as of 6am yesterday.
Ice was particularly likely around daybreak in foggy areas.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council was also warning motorists about icy conditions.
