The New Zealand Internatio­nal Film Festival is holding a sneak preview of this year’s lineup on Saturday afternoon at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, followed by afternoon tea put on by the Dunedin Film Society. It offers a chance to see some of the latest films made by internatio­nal directors that have recieved rave reviews overseas.

Volcanic risk

Prof Colin Wilson gives the 2018 New Zealand Rutherford Lecture at Otago Museum this evening. His speciality is supervolca­noes and he aims to forecast volcanic phenomena with enough warning so communitie­s can respond. He will explain the nature of supervolca­noes, the ways they operate and can be studied, and whether the next eruption is likely to take us by surprise.

Memorial concert

The Royal Dunedin Male Choir will perform a concert on Saturday at Olveston Historic Home, in Dunedin. The choir will perform in memory of David Theomin, its longterm member and patron and former owner of Olveston.

Opposition to conscripti­on

Artist Bob Kerr will talk about Archie Baxter, Mark Briggs and Number One Field Punishment at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum, Dunedin, on Saturday afternoon. He will show images from exhibition­s about Tim Armstrong, imprisoned in Lyttelton during World War 1 for opposing conscripti­on, and the 1916 police invasion of Rua Kenana’s community at Maungapoha­tu.
