Australians are also outraged by their minister
YOUR editorial (24.7.18) on Australia was spot on.
As an Australian visiting Dunedin to catch up with friends from my time at Otago University, let me advise that there are very many Australians who are also outraged with the performance of Peter Dutton, our Immigration Minister.
That outrage is not just because of his intemperate remarks to Justice Minister Andrew Little, but because of his trampling of the basic rights of refugees.
I believe that most Australians regard him as a divisive and aggressive minister whose general performance in his portfolio is entirely underwhelming.

Use of cycleways
REGARDING Heather Murray’s letter (ODT, 24.7.18), do I qualify for her proposed competition?
While sitting in one of the regular traffic jams created by the changed traffic flow (or lack of) ensuing from the establishment of the cycleway, I did spot a cyclist.
I may be disqualified as, in all honesty, I admit the person in question was riding on the footpath, but they were at least near the cycleway. At the time, the cycleway was being used by a pair of pedestrians following the jolly green pathway.
This leads me to wonder why in Dunedin, as in many other cities seeking to promote alternative transport methods, the footpaths were not just widened a little into joint pedestrian/cyclist facilities.
In most other places in the world, similar systems are successfully used. Also, look no further than the Otago Harbour side path. John Marshall
