Southern sides aim for better results

- JEFF CHESHIRE

THE three southern teams will have a point to prove as the Southern Football League moves into its fourth round.

All three suffered losses last week, although the matches do not get any easier.

Dunedin Technical remains in the best position of the southern sides, although it had its chances dented with a lastminute 21 loss to Ferrymead Bays last week.

That leaves it in thirdplace on five points, although it is one of only two teams to have played four games.

The other of those teams, Nomads United, leads the league on eight, while Cashmere Tech has seven points but has a game in hand.

Dunedin Tech has the chance to jump ahead of the unbeaten Cashmere tomorrow, as it travels to Christchurch to take on the league favourites.

Cashmere’s two wins so far have come against the other two southern sides — Queenstown and Southland United.

It scored nine goals combined in those games, and containing that attack will be key for Dunedin Tech.

The one time Cashmere was contained it was held to a 11 draw by Ferrymead Bays.

There is plenty of experience in the Tech lineup though, notably in its Irish Southern United contingent.

If it is to draw level with Nomads, however, it will need a favour from Southland.

Southland is still searching for its first win and has scored just one goal — against Queenstown — in its three matches.

It faces a big challenge in travelling to Christchurch to topple the topofthetable side.

Led by dangerous striker Stephen Hoyle, Nomads has also shown the ability to score goals, and played out an exciting 22 draw against Dunedin Tech two weeks ago.

In the first game of the weekend, Queenstown FC hosts Coastal Spirit tomorrow.

Coming off a tough 50 loss to Nelson Suburbs in which travel proved an obstacle, Queenstown will not lack motivation.

The side brings an attacking mindset and will be hopeful of creating some chances against a side which has leaked seven goals — admittedly against good teams — in the past two games.

In the fourth game of the round, Ferrymead Bays FC hosts Nelson Suburbs.
