Early goal sets pace for Roslyn
ROSLYN Wakari, Caversham and Otago University all claimed wins in the latest round of club football.
Roslyn scored early, despite an even opening period, and carried that on to beat Green Island 42 at Ellis Park in the clash of the two top teams.
The early goal was a wellworked team goal that involved some neat midfield interplay.
In the end. a cross by Matt Cordelle from the right was guided home by Nick Treadwell.
Roslyn then misplaced a back pass, which allowed Lewis Wall to dart in and required a smart save from Tom Stevens.
Green Island finished the first half the stronger with a number of crosses into the box, but was unable to find the equaliser.
A closerange shot from Green Island drew the best out of Stevens early in the second half.
Roslyn’s Nathan Wilkie then delivered a ball into the box that captain Harley Rodeka slotted home, scoring his first goal of the season to make it 20.
Green Island came close when Tom Milton’s free kick was just tipped around the post.
Soon after, Roslyn went 30 up as Cam Anderson found space up the middle, drew the keeper Stew Catto in and laid it off to Tennesse Kinghorn for a side foot finish.
Anderson then scored himself with a neat finish into the bottom lefthand corner to make the game safe at 40.
Green Island showed its mettle and scored two late goals through Tom Milton and Cody Robinson to make the final score 42 to Roslyn.
Caversham made sure its recent profligacy in front of goals would not haunt it again with a ruthless 91 win over Northern at Forrester Park.
With Andrew Ridden and Alan McBride back in the team, it raced to a 41 halftime lead thanks to a brace from Ryan Fleming and a goal apiece to Ben Wade and Ridden. There was no respite in the second half as Ridden added two more to claim a hattrick and Fleming added a penalty to get his own hattrick.
Wade chipped in with another and Jared Grove came on to complete the scoring in a comprehensive 91 victory.
At Logan Park, University claimed its second win of the season with a 42 win over Mosgiel.
Two early goals were traded in the first six minutes when University’s Harry Gaskin’s secondminute opener was cancelled out by Mosgiel’s Fernando Montado four minutes later.
Dominic Scahill put the students ahead with an 18thminute penalty when Mosgiel keeper Sean McDonald received a yellow card for a reckless challenge.
Mosgiel’s top striker, Regan Coldicott, restored parity win the 29th minute.
University went ahead in the second half, thanks to a brace by Caleb Roberts in the 55th and 79th minutes, and Mosgiel was unable to reply.
