Award for camp contractor

- STAFF REPORTER

A CAMP Glenorchy contractor has won a national award for its work on the project.

Evident won the 2018 New Zealand KNX Award (Commercial), in large part due to the role the control and monitoring systems played in the project’s targets of reducing water and energy use by 50% and generate as much energy as it consumed over a year.

KNX is an international building control standard which enables the integration of programming of a range of products and manufacturers into a single software tool.

Glenorchy, which officially opened in March, integrated lighting, heating — including a stratified thermal store, heat pumps and solar water heating — ventilation, window openers, water management including potable and grey water, EV car charging, composting toilets and guest timed showers.

It enabled automatic control of ventilation, lighting and heating, monitoring of carbon dioxide and the ability for the system to draw from solar or thermal generation, depending on the weather or time of day.

It was also integrated with the property management system so bookings and guest arrival times could be used to ensure rooms and water were only heated when necessary. It enabled guests to see the control settings, make adjustments and gave feedback on how adjustments affected the building’s overall efficiency.

In total, the Camp Glenorchy system used more than 400 KNX devices and was able to monitor about 1600 data points.

Evident was also nominated for the international Peoples’ Choice award for the project.

Company technical director and cofounder Shay Brazier said the international award pitted Evident against ‘‘enormous European integrators’’.

‘‘We’re really proud to be both a finalist internationally and to have won the New Zealand best commercial project. It’s a way to recognise a project that is leading the way and showing an example of what can be done in the hope that the next project will build upon that, and be even better.’’
