Roslyn firmly on top with 6nil victory
ROSLYN Wakari cemented its place atop the Otago Daily
Times Southern Championship with an emphatic 60 victory over University at Ellis Park on Saturday.
Roslyn was dominant from the kickoff and was 20 up after only five minutes. Nathan Wilkie intercepted a loose square ball from University’s defence at the back and slotted home with composure.
Wilkie was then clipped in the penalty box and Nick Tredwell converted the resultant penalty.
Cam Anderson tapped home to continue the goalfest and Wilkie nodded home to make it 40 at the break.
Tennessee Kinghorn was introduced in the second half and quickly got on the scoresheet. Ben O’Farrell scored the final goal.
Green Island and Caversham played out a very entertaining and highscoring match at Sunnyvale, the visitor running out a 43 winner.
Caversham started on the front foot and created plenty of chances to score in the opening period but Stu Catto was having a great game in goal.
Youngster Tom Durkin scored first after 30 minutes when he took a free kick that sailed into the top corner.
Green Island got the equaliser on 49 minutes when Max Johnston scored.
Caversham’s Andrew Ridden then finished off a slick passing move in the 56th minute to make it 21. The goal spurred Green Island and it pushed Caversham into a defensive error. Max Johnston rifled a powerful strike past Zane Green to tie it up once more.
Green Island was now on the front foot and soon went ahead, when Tom Milton scored after an hour.
Caversham came back and won more ball and with three minutes left Ryan Fleming made up for an earlier miss and equalised to tie it up again.
The goal lifted Caversham and in the third minute of stoppage time, Ridden stepped up and finished off a passing move that caught out the Green Island defence to take the victory.
Northern went behind early to Mosgiel in Mosgiel but soon equalised as Lathim Greg crossed a perfect ball for Harry Fraser to capitalise with a headed goal.
In a moment of individual brilliance, Fraser scored Northern’s second goal by controlling the ball in the middle of the park as he ran through Mosgiel’s defence.
His shot from outside the box beat the despairing dive of replacement keeper Ryan Clarke to give his side a 21 half time lead.
In the second half, Mosgiel came back with an incredible determination but an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Levi Washington ensured Northern took all three points.
