Queenstown revels on grass
QUEENSTOWN Rovers ignored its inability to get on the training field when it beat Dunedin Technical at Tahuna Park on Saturday.
The visiting side won 31 in their Southern Football League clash and passed Technical on the ladder.
Queenstown has been unable to train on grass at the resort’s events centre due to bad weather and Rovers coach Jamie Whitmarsh said it was the first time in a month the players had got out on the paddock.
They obviously enjoyed it, coming away with a convincing win, after leading through a Josh Cartman goal at halftime.
Whitmarsh said the Queenstown side had played well and deserved its win.
The side kept hold of the ball well, was physical when it needed to be and there was a good desperation in the side.
Technical scored an equaliser halfway through the second half with a nice touch from veteran Alister Rickerby.
But Queenstown continued to put on the pressure and went ahead on the 82nd minute.
A nice corner came in and Cartman showed some real effort to get up to the ball and head it into the back of the net.
The win was sealed by Adam Hewson five minutes later and it was an enjoyable ride back to Queenstown after the game with the three points in the bag.
Youngster Hayato Uoneto had an outstanding game for Queenstown in the unfamiliar position of left back while the Queenstown side ran hard all day.
It was not a great day for the home teams in the league, as every side which hosted a game lost.
Southland United could not make the most of Nelson having to travel all the way to Invercargill and Nelson Suburbs ended up winning comfortably, 30.
It was ahead 20 at the break and never looked troubled.
In Christchurch, Cashmere Technical went to the top of the table with a 31 win over previous leader Nomads United.
In the other game, Ferrymead leapfrogged Coastal Spirit 21 to go into third place.
