Molyneux stuns Dunstan A

- ANGELA MCDONALD

IN the final game of the second round, Molyneux took on Dunstan A, in a highly anticipated match. Noone would have picked the scoreline as Molyneux was a convincing winner, 5130.

Having beaten Molyneux in the first round, Dunstan A went into this match with high confidence and netted the first three goals. Molyneux however, just needed the time to settle into some new combinations, and there were some nerves from its shooters, who were unusually inaccurate for the opening quarter. But the side capitalised on its ability to gain rebounds and it took the first quarter 107.

Molyneux continued its strong, fast play into the second quarter and Dunstan was left stunned, simply unable to keep up with the speed. Molyneux goalshoot Fiona King was holding strong under the post, creating beautiful space which the Dunstan defenders could not get around.

Molyneux’s midcourt defence was a huge team effort, breaking the Dunstan zone and being patient and controlled in its pass.

Dunstan rang the changes at the halftime break but Molyneux pushed on with changes of its own, which never affected the flow of play. Megan Longman was a welcome addition to the Molyneux midcourt, directing ball into the circle edge, and exerting pressure on the Dunstan feeders.

Both teams were at the mercy of the umpires, with some players struggling to adjust to the calls. It appeared Dunstan was simply outclassed by Molyneux’s speed and its oncourt connections that have evolved over the season.

A Cromwell Senior A beat Dunstan B 4528, and Vincent and Roxburgh Area School A had a tight tussle in the first quarter, before Vincent pulled away and took the match 5727.
