POLICE are continuing to investigate the cause of a serious crash that occurred between Omarama and Otematata on Wednesday and injured four people, two critically.

The singlevehicle crash happened about 7.45pm on State Highway 83, near the intersection of Lake View Pl, just north of Sailors Cutting, when a vehicle went off the road and crashed into a bank.

Two of the vehicle’s occupants were critically injured and another two suffered moderate injuries.

A pair of rescue helicopters was sent from Dunedin.

A St John spokesman said both critically injured patients were flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter, one in each, and the two moderately injured patients were transported to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.

The ages and genders of those injured were not available, the spokesman said.

A police spokeswoman said the serious crash unit attended and had started an investigation, but limited information was available from the scene due to poor mobile phone service.

However, it was confirmed the driver of the vehicle was tested for alcohol use at the scene.

The spokeswoman said the result of that test was yet to be confirmed.

No further information on the cause of the crash was released yesterday.
