Australian rugby fans trash Airbnb house

- CHELSEA BOYLE

AUCKLAND: An Auckland Airbnb user is upset his Wallabies guests have broken his strict no big parties rule, trashing the rented house on Bledisloe game night before absconding back across the Ditch.

Ravi Punjwani said he prided himself on taking close care of all the properties he managed.

But he was disgusted by the state of his Onehunga property after a group of 16 Australians used it for their trip to New Zealand to watch the test match at Eden Park.

Yesterday morning, the suburban home was littered with glass fragments and empty beer bottles after the All Blacks dominated the Wallabies on Saturday night.

Clothing and bedding was strewn across the house, including several pairs of underwear.

There were also smudge marks on the carpet, a small dent in the lounge wall and splatters of liquid on the walls and ceiling.

Mr Punjwani said the group had broken the house rules by having such a large party.

‘‘We don’t allow such groups. If you want to party, you can’t rent our house,’’ he said.

‘‘This is a residential area.’’ ‘‘They have covered the smoke alarm because they wanted to smoke in here.’’

That was another breach of the rules, because it was strictly a nosmoking area, he said.

It was frustrating for the young family who had immigrated to New Zealand two years ago, he said.

‘‘This is our dream project. We want to add more houses [to the business].’’

A lot of the time, it felt like a mistake to be involved in managing rental properties, but maybe ‘‘some day we will find a way to resolve all these issues’’.

‘‘We would never do this [to someone else’s home].’’

Mr Punjwani said the renter had assured him there would be no parties after he changed the booking from one person to 16 and inquired whether the bond was refundable.

Mr Punjwani has insurance for the house, not including contents, but his excess was $1000 so it was unlikely he would claim, he said. — NZME
