SGHS off to finals again

SOUTHLAND Girls’ High School is heading to yet another national top four secondary schools rugby final series.

For the seventh straight year, Southland Girls’ has been crowned South Island champion and remains the only school in New Zealand to advance to every national final series since the girls competition was introduced in 2012.

The latest South Island title came via a victory over Christchurch Girls’ High

School in Dunedin on Saturday.

Again, the Invercargill side left little doubt about the result, winning 390.

The scores were locked up at 00 through the majority of the first half before three tries in the final 10 minutes before the break pushed it out to 15nil.

Southland Girls then pulled away in the second half, scoring a further 24 answered points.

Southland Girls’ now has its sights on the top four in Palmerston North. Games are to be played on September 7 and 9.

Southland Girls’ coach Nathan Muir was delighted with what the team produced in the South Island final on Saturday.

‘‘Obviously we are happy with the 39 [points scored]. But as a coach the most pleasing thing is the zero [conceded],’’ Muir said.

‘‘To not let in a point you’ve got to be going well as a team; everyone has to play well. That is the strength of the team; everyone contributes.’’

Southland also had some success on Saturday in the Highlanders regional coed tournament final. Gore High School beat St Kevin’s College 2320 to progress to the South Island final.
