Otago Daily Times

Winners keeping up with the news

- JOHN LEWIS

THE questions were definitely harder this year, but organisers of the Otago Daily Times Extra! current events quiz in Dunedin were surprised by how little it slowed the competitors.

The years 9 and 10 competition was held at Kaikorai Valley College last night, and was won by Columba College (team 23).

Team members Georgia Wong, Olivia Charles and Jody Syme said they were surprised, but delighted, to win because the questions were so much more obscure than in previous years.

At the end of the competition, King’s High School (45) and Taieri College (7) were tied on second place, forcing organisers to hold a ‘‘quizoff’’.

After several extra questions, and a nailbiting wait, the two teams were separated and Taieri College was placed second, ahead of King’s High School in third place.

The placegetters were among 49 teams and almost 200 pupils from around Dunedin in the competition.

The competition continues tomorrow afternoon when year 5 and 6 teams strive for top honours at Bathgate Park School from 4.30pm to 6pm, and years 7 and 8 pupils compete between 6.30pm and 8pm.

A The Otago Daily Times Extra! current events quizzes are part of the newspaper’s Class Act project, which celebrates the excellence of young people. Extra! is a monthly educational publication produced by the newspaper for senior primary, intermediate and junior secondary school pupils.
