Successful championships for Dunedin competitors

COMPETITORS from the Dunedin Gymnastics Academy competed with success at last weekend’s South Island Championships in Timaru.

The academy achieved a host of topfive finishes, alongside a handful of first places.

Amaya Leslie claimed an impressive first all around in the step nine grade.

Molly Ballard claimed first in the vault, second in the floor and third in the beam, for second all around in step seven.

In step three, Fleur de Clifford took first in the beam and also emerged fourth all around.

In step eight Ella Macgillivray claimed third in the floor and fourth in the bar, while Abby Stevens and Bridie Shelton were fifth in the bar and beam respectively.

Nuala O’MalleyKing was second in the step six beam.

Saige Evans finished fifth all around in the step five grade, claiming third in the beam and fifth in the bars.

Ella Rowe also impressed in that grade, securing second in the bar, fourth in the vault and fifth in the floor.

On top of that, Hannah Pearce was fourth in the floor and Yui Ishikawa was fifth in the beam.

India Doughtery was fifth in the step five overs vault, while Taya Kain was second in the beam.

Camryn Tutty claimed third and fourth in the step three vault and floor respectively, while Petra Andrews was fourth in the vault.

The steps refer to the grades in which the gymnasts compete, based on ability.

Competitors progress through the grades until step 10, which is the highest.
