At the heart of the Caversham community

-

MITCHELLS Tavern, situated in the heart of Caversham, is very proud to be part of the caring local community.

The Caversham Community Group (CCG) continues to work tirelessly to improve the area and engage local residents.

One of the projects they have been involved with recently is the bike track.

The 280m sealed track loops around the school’s playing field, and is the perfect place for kids to get some safe cycling experience. It also provides a running route, and expands the school’s winter playing surface.

A joint project between the school and the CCG, with funding provided by the DCC and Lion Foundation, planning began in March 2016. The official opening will be on Thursday, October 25.

In conjunction with the bike track, the school has also sourced 50 bikes of various sizes, which are stored in a container on the grounds. Future plans include an adjacent learner track, and weekend cycle clinics.

The group and the school are now endeavouring to get funding to buy sewing machines for a sewing room at the school, for both pupils and the community.

The CCG is involved in a raft of other projects around the suburb. These include planting fruit trees at the Caversham Reserve, opposite Carisbrook School on South Road, with more sites planned, having a drinking fountain installed at Kew Reserve, and creating a heritage walking tour of the area’s historic sites. More recently, the CCG and school has established a sewing workshop located at Carisbrook School and available to students, but also community outside school hours.

They’re also behind the Caversham Community Pantry, which can be found outside the Caversham Baptist Community Trust at 336 South Rd.

The pantry is a place to share with the community surplus from people’s gardens and fruit trees, unused pantry items, vegetable seedlings, jams, chutneys, and more. Anyone can give to, or take from the pantry, but be mindful of others who may need a helping hand.

Other recent developments in the area include Dunedin Roofing Systems changing hands and being refurbished, and House of Kavina being renamed Bride & Winter by its new owners.

Remember that it’s Loud Shirt Day this Friday, September 28, with a superhero theme this year. For more information, check out the FAQs at www.loudshirtday.org.nz/faq
