More bus hub disruption — intersection out of action

- STAFF REPORTER

A CENTRAL city intersection will be closed for up to four days as work on Dunedin’s new bus hub continues.

The Dunedin City Council said yesterday the intersection of Great King and St Andrew Sts would be closed from Sunday evening for ‘‘three or four days’’.

The closure was needed for continuing bus hub work, including the connection of a water main, council 3 Waters group manager Tom Dyer said.

Contractors working on the bus hub had found a water main outside Dunedin’s Central Police Station was closer to the kerb than expected.

The pipe was in ‘‘reasonable condition’’, but the layout — including a connection across the St Andrew St intersection — needed to change so it could be easily accessed in future.

‘‘Doing the work now will avoid disruption at the site once the bus hub is completed and in service,’’ he said.

Retailers had already been contacted about the disruption and contractors would be working 24 hours a day to complete the work ‘‘as quickly as possible’’, he said.

New traffic signal poles and cables would be installed at the same time.

Harbour Fish retail manager Nancy Anderson said when contacted the business would remain ‘‘open as usual’’ despite the work, as customers could drive in from Great King St and out on to St Andrew St.

Mr Dyer said work on the new bus hub remained on schedule for completion in late November.
