Second NZ record broken by Dunedin swimmer at Buenos Aires games
ERIKA Fairweather has broken her second New Zealand record in as many days.
The Dunedin swimmer clocked a time of 8min 56.14sec in the 800m freestyle at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires yesterday.
That was nearly a second faster than Mya Rasmussen’s previous mark for the 14year age group of 8min 56.96sec.
The record was Fairweather’s fourth in the age group, as she already held the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle records.
She won her heat, although she was not in the fast heat from which the medal winners were found.
It followed a firstday performance in which she broke her own 100m freestyle national record in a time of 57.16sec.
A fourth placing was the highlight for the New Zealand team on day three yesterday.
Taupo’s Briar BurnettGrant and her Australasian show jumping team held a share of the lead going into the final round of competition.
BurnettGrant and borrowed horse Maximo went second for the team and dropped just one rail.
However, the team dropped from medal contention when the last combination dropped seven rails, relegating the Australasians to fourth place.
At the sailing venue, a stiff 20knot breeze greeted kiteboarder Pia Gordon and windsurfer teammates Max van der Zalm and Veerle ten Have.
Gordon managed an 11th and a 12th in the high winds, putting her in 12th overall.
Ten Have won her first race and was 12th in her second, moving her to eighth.
Van der Zalm finished ninth and 10th to sit in 15th overall.
The boardsailors have another three days of competition.
